It is Western Maine Community Action's mission to advocate for, strengthen, and coordinate all resources - private, local, state, and federal - that will assist us in promoting the self-sufficiency of people. WMCA began in June 1965, in response to the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 - the "War on Poverty". The agency began in Franklin County, Maine as the Franklin County Community Action Council, and in 1987, changed its name to Western Maine Community Action to more accurately reflect it's growth and service area. Today, the agency provides services in Franklin, Androscoggin, and Oxford counties, and serves roughly 12,000 people annually with programs to help low-income families achieve economic security. The Promise of Community Action: Community Action changes people's lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.
