For energy, the huts have wood and propane heat, solar and in one case hydro power, along with composting toilets, hot showers, and well water. This position is ideal for someone interested in recreational or outdoor resource management, green building design and operation, conservation education, or similar fields. This is an opportunity to live rent-free and off-the-grid, with a recreational playground at your fingertips. Kayaking, canoeing, bicycling, hiking, and camping are all possible from the huts. Responsibilities Serve as primary contact person between the MH&T office and the hut. Welcome arriving visitors, familiarize them with the operation and rules concerning the facilities, and provide information about Maine Huts & Trail. The trail network consists of 50 miles of groomed, Nordic ski trails connecting the huts, and over 30 miles of non-groomed hiking, biking and snowshoe side trails. Every year brings opportunities to volunteer on this extensive network! Some of the opportunities are listed below: Preserving cedar trail signs with water sealant Building or replacing timber bridges Cutting back foliage along the trail corridor Cleaning yearly build-up from drainages and culverts Digging drainage ditches Removing blow downs Clearing new trail Naturalizing and re-vegetating new trail Maintaining stone or timber drainage structures Mowing back grass or woody vegetation Fall Opportunities: Freshly fallen leaves mark the onset of winter prep season.
