Description

Trail Work:

Maine Huts & Trails has built over 80 miles of trail with the help of volunteers. The trail network consists of 50 miles of groomed, Nordic ski trails connecting the huts, and over 30 miles of non-groomed hiking, biking and snowshoe side trails. Every year brings opportunities to volunteer on this extensive network! Some of the opportunities are listed below:

  • Preserving cedar trail signs with water sealant
  • Building or replacing timber bridges
  • Cutting back foliage along the trail corridor
  • Cleaning yearly build-up from drainages and culverts
  • Digging drainage ditches
  • Removing blow downs
  • Clearing new trail
  • Naturalizing and re-vegetating new trail
  • Maintaining stone or timber drainage structures
  • Mowing back grass or woody vegetation

Fall Opportunities:

Freshly fallen leaves mark the onset of winter prep season.

  • Nordic trails need to be mowed and leaf-blown
  • Side trails need low-hanging branches to be trimmed back.
  • Cedar signs need to be preserved

Winter Opportunities: Snowshoeing out the single track trails throughout the system to pack them out for easier snowshoeing and mountain and/or fat-tire biking.

Spring Opportunities:

Receding snow brings warmer weather and the year’s first trail maintenance projects!

  • Drainages and culverts need cleaning
  • GPS inventory projects
  • Blow down patrol

 Summer Opportunities:

Long days and ample swimming opportunities are paired with high productivity.

  • New trail building
  • Bridge projects
  • Stone and timber construction
