Hut Volunteer Job Descriptions
Volunteer Ambassador (VA) (usually 10 am to 2 pm):
Purpose: Supplement and augment staff hospitality to enhance guest experience.
Check in with staff upon arrival and ask for their priorities.
- Greet guests, but stay alert to people who want to keep to themselves.
- Promote membership as a response to enthusiasm expressed for hut, system, staff, etc. (be careful not to do this gratuitously).
- Tend fire including topping up wood supply, kindling and fire-starter materials (fire starter and kindling in basement).
- Wipe down tables and chairs as needed.
- When special requests arise, help staff as needed.
Be sure to fill enter volunteer hours before leaving.
Volunteer Hut Staff (VHS) (usually overnight, 4 pm to 10 am next day):
Purpose: Augment staff in virtually all staff responsibilities
Check in with staff upon arrival and ask for their priorities. Sample responsibilities in order of possibility / probability and interest:
- Always, enhance guest experience, see Volunteer Ambassador job description
- Dishwashing
- Food prep help like peeling potatoes, etc.
- Setting tables for dinner and breakfast
- Cleaning, washing down tables in dining room
- Dusting and wiping down chairs, benches and window sills
- Dusting throughout living areas of huts
- Sweeping floors; washing floors
- Firewood replenishment
- Into Basement for Tarm
- For stove(s) in dining/living room areas
- Straightening and organizing
- Library spaces
- Utility closets
- Basement spaces
- Food pantries
- Clearing, widening paths to and between huts
- Other cleaning jobs:
- Basement floors
- Bunkhouses: wiping down mattresses, pillows and window sills.
- Bathrooms: sinks, mirrors, toilets and / or shower stalls
